A first glimpse of Mufasa showcases an abundance of wildlife
Mufasa: A Lion King Redux
Disney's unleashed the first sneak peek at Mufasa: The Lion King, the latest entry in Barry Jenkins' live-action Disney remake saga. It's chock-full of lions, gazelles, hyenas, and other wildlife, a veritable appetizer for wildlife enthusiasts. But let's cut to the chase; Beyoncé's mini-me, Blue Ivy Carter, seems to be stealing the show.
Well, technically, Blue Ivy is just a name tag, but she's also the linchpin of Jenkins' fascinating framing device for Mufasa. The young missy is set to portray Kiara, the offspring of Nala and Simba, who hears the epic tale of her granddaddy Mufasa's rise to power. The story is narrated by none other than Rafiki, played by John Kani, with a little helping hand from Timon and Pumbaa, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen. The dynamic duo provides a few insightful interjections about young Mufasa's life.
Apart from the enchanting tale, we can't help but gawk over the star-studded cast. Here are the highlights, fresh from Disney's morning announcement:
- Aaron Pierre takes on the role of Mufasa, an orphaned lion who ascends to the throne
- Kelvin Harrison Jr. brings Taka to life, a lion prince who befriends Mufasa but later becomes the notorious Scar
- Tiffany Boone portrays Sarabi, the future queen of the Pride Lands and mother of Simba
- John Kani returns as the wise mandrill, Rafiki
- Mads Mikkelsen joins the crew as Kiros, the leader of a formidable group of white lions

Of course, we can't forget about Braelyn Rankins and Brielle Rankins, who lend their voices to Mufasa as a cub, and Theo Somolu, who voices Taka in his younger years.
The original musical maestro, Lin-Manuel Miranda, will pen the new songs. Mufasa: The Lion King is set to roar onto the big screens on December 20, 2024.
