A new Amazon Kindle device is being released

Amazon has announced the release of a new Kindle model, set to hit shelves on August 27. The device, named the Amazon Kindle, boasts several improvements over its predecessors, including a brighter display, better contrast, and more power under the hood.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon's founder and CEO, has expressed his view that Amazon can make a significant contribution by focusing on a purpose-built reading device. This perspective may influence future design decisions for the device.

The new Kindle will be available in two versions: a 3G model priced at $189 and a WiFi-only version for $139. Both versions will come in two colours: white and graphite.

One of the key features of the new Kindle is its enhanced battery capacity, providing a month of backup time on a single full charge (with wireless turned off). The device is also lighter and thinner than the Kindle 2.

In line with Amazon's commitment to creating a dedicated reading device, the new Kindle does not feature a color display or touchscreen. Instead, it offers a display with a 50 percent better contrast and a refresh rate that is 20 percent faster.

The internal memory of the new Kindle has been increased to 4GB. Additionally, the keyboard and five-way controls have been streamlined and slightly tweaked for a more user-friendly experience.

Jeff Bezos's comments suggest that Amazon has no immediate plans to introduce a color display or touchscreen in future Kindle models. He believes that adding video and animation to books is distracting rather than enhancing.

Amazon plans to continue focusing on creating a dedicated reading device rather than diversifying into LCD tablets. In fact, Bezos does not see a need for Amazon to be the 101st company making LCD tablets.

To cater to the UK market, a UK-specific version of the new Kindle and a UK e-book store have been announced. This move is expected to expand Amazon's reach in the region and provide a more tailored reading experience for UK users.

In summary, the new Amazon Kindle offers a significant upgrade in terms of performance and battery life, while maintaining its focus as a dedicated reading device. With its brighter display, improved contrast, and streamlined controls, the new Kindle is set to deliver an even better reading experience for users.
