ACCIONA Leads COMECOCO2 Project for Green Methanol in Maritime Sector

ACCIONA is playing a key role in the COMECOCO2 project, aiming to validate an efficient system for producing green methanol. The project, funded with nearly €4 million, involves 12 entities and aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the maritime sector.

ACCIONA's responsibilities in the project include studying, designing, installing, and integrating the final methanol synthesis system in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The innovative technology uses high-temperature co-electrolysis of captured CO2 and water vapor, sourced from biogas and reclaimed water respectively. This process is expected to achieve process efficiencies above 65% and reduce energy consumption by 25% compared to conventional methods.

The COMECOCO2 project aims to apply this green methanol production system in the maritime sector, helping to decarbonize this industry. The system's integration into a WWTP demonstrates its potential for wider application and scalability.

ACCIONA's involvement in the COMECOCO2 project is set to advance green methanol production, with potential significant reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions. The successful validation of this system could pave the way for its wider adoption in the maritime sector and beyond.
