Activated Genes: An Unusual Video Call Function in WhatsApp Unveiled

In an exciting update for iOS 17 users, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that adds a touch of fun and interactivity to video calls. This innovative feature allows users to trigger various animations like hearts, balloons, fireworks, storm, and lasers during video calls using specific hand gestures.

## Activating Animations on WhatsApp

To make the most of this new feature, ensure that your iPhone is updated to iOS 17. Once you've started a video call on WhatsApp, follow these steps:

1. Pull down the Control Center from the top-right corner of your iPhone screen. 2. Tap on the "Effects" button in the Control Center. 3. Activate the reactions option within the Effects menu. 4. Use specific hand gestures to trigger AR effects like confetti, bubbles, and more. For example, using both hands to make a thumbs up can trigger fireworks.

## Customizing Animations

While the specific gestures for WhatsApp are not as detailed as for FaceTime, users can customise their experience by exploring different gestures and reactions available through the Effects option in the Control Center.

## Other Video Calling Apps (e.g., FaceTime)

For apps like FaceTime, the process is similar but with more defined gestures. For instance, forming a heart shape with both hands will trigger hearts to fly in the background, while showing a thumbs up can trigger fireworks.

## Availability

This feature is currently only available on iPhones with iOS 17 or later. It's worth noting that the animations in WhatsApp work in other video calling apps, such as FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams, provided they support reactions.

While WhatsApp animations are enabled by default in iOS 17 and later, disabling them requires a system-wide settings change. To do this, navigate to Settings > FaceTime > Reactions.

The animations in WhatsApp are system-wide and cannot be disabled individually within the app.

This new feature from WhatsApp is set to revolutionise video calls by offering a more engaging and entertaining experience for users. Whether you're catching up with friends or conducting business meetings, the addition of animations is sure to bring a fresh and fun element to your video calls.
