ADB Approves $190M Loan for Indore Metro Rail Project

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 190 million loan for the Indore Metro Rail Project in Madhya Pradesh, India. The project aims to enhance urban mobility, reduce pollution, and promote inclusive growth in Indore. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) will implement the project, with operations expected to begin by January 2030.

The project will finance the construction of an 8.62-kilometre underground metro line with seven stations, connecting congested areas of Indore to the airport. The metro line will incorporate accessibility features for various groups, including ramps, lifts, CCTV surveillance, and emergency response systems, benefiting the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities.

ADB's support extends to planning initiatives that benefit women and girls. It includes internship and training programs to build capacity among women in the transport sector. Commercial spaces at select stations will be allocated to women entrepreneurs and self-help groups, with safety audits and ridership data guiding future improvements.

The initiative includes multimodal integration with existing bus and feeder services, improving access to educational institutions and markets. A multimodal integration study will also be conducted to optimise connectivity between metro, airport, railway, and bus systems. ADB will collaborate with existing transit-oriented development (TOD) technical assistance to enhance Indore's TOD planning and policy.

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited is responsible for the planning and implementation of the Indore Metro Rail Project. The metro line is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 12,414 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually and improve air quality.

The Indore Metro Rail Project, supported by a USD 190 million ADB loan, promises to transform urban mobility in Indore. With its focus on accessibility, multimodal integration, and women's empowerment, the project aims to reduce pollution, promote inclusive growth, and connect key areas of the city to the airport by January 2030.
