Amazon (AWS) introduces a division dedicated to space commerce operations

The world is entering an exciting new age in space, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) at the forefront of this daring venture. AWS has announced a new business segment called 'Aerospace and Satellite Solutions', dedicated to accelerating innovation in the global aerospace and satellite industry.

Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Worldwide Public Sector at AWS, made the announcement. This new segment aims to reimagine space system architectures and transform space enterprises. The leader of this new business unit is retired Air Force Major General Clint Crosier, former director of Space Force Planning at the US Space Force.

NASA's Project Artemis is also investing in this new era, with the aim of fostering a sustainable commercial space economy. The US space agency plans to build Space Launch System (SLS) solid rocket boosters for up to six additional flights, totaling up to nine Artemis missions.

Thousands of new satellites are expected to be launched over the next five years by companies providing low-latency internet, high-resolution Earth observation, and ubiquitous Internet of Things (IoT) communications. AWS Ground Station, a fully managed service, is expected to support these satellite launches by providing global access to space workloads.

The new segment will bring AWS services and solutions to the space enterprise. It will launch new services that process space data on Earth and in orbit. AWS Ground Station is already involved in collaborations with Lockheed Martin to help solve some of the world's toughest problems. Rick Ambrose, Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin Space, expressed excitement about Amazon Web Services extending its cloud computing experience to space, fostering collaborations with Lockheed Martin.

The new segment will also work with customers and partners around the world. It is expected to provide secure, scalable, and cost-efficient cloud solutions. AWS Ground Station is currently being used by NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) and various other customers.

As we embark on this new journey into space, AWS's Aerospace and Satellite Solutions segment promises to play a significant role in shaping the future of space exploration and commerce. The world eagerly awaits the innovations and advancements that this new segment will bring.
