Amazon corporate staff members handle logistics and coordination for grocery deliveries, but the actual grocery deliveries are typically carried out by independent contractors or delivery drivers.
Amazon Expands Delivery Services and Invites Corporate Employees to Volunteer
Seattle-based Amazon, ranked No. 2 on Progressive Grocer's 2025 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America, is set to expand its same-day and next-day delivery services to millions of U.S. customers in over 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural areas by the end of this year.
This year's Prime Day event, scheduled for July 8-11, is the longest summer Prime Day sale to date. In preparation for this, Amazon has called upon its corporate employees to volunteer at the company's warehouses for grocery delivery during the sale.
During the Prime Day sales in July 2025, Amazon requested corporate volunteers to work two-hour shifts at an Amazon warehouse in Brooklyn to help pick items, prepare carts, pack boxes, and prepare grocery bags to support the grocery delivery service. This practice was intended to help corporate employees get closer to customers while allowing store teams to focus on their core work.
The call for volunteers was made via a Slack message to thousands of white-collar workers in the New York City area. The tasks for the volunteers include picking items, preparing carts and bags of groceries, packing boxes, and boosting morale. An Amazon spokesman, Griffin Buch, stated that this support is entirely optional.
Amazon's North America segment sales increased by 8% year over year to $92.9 billion in the first quarter ended March 31. The company delivered to Prime members at record-breaking speeds in 2023 and 2024 and is on pace to get even faster in 2025.
In addition to the traditionally popular items like electronics, apparel, toys, and home décor, the sale includes groceries and everyday essentials. A new promotion for Prime members, "Today's Big Deals," offers deep savings drops across various themes.
Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy recently acknowledged that the company will need fewer people in some jobs due to the potential of GenAI. However, he encouraged employees to educate themselves about the technology, use and experiment with AI, and help the company reinvent itself. Those who embrace the change, become conversant in AI, help build and improve the company's AI capabilities, and deliver for customers will be well positioned.
Amazon was also named among Progressive Grocer's Retailers of the Century. The manager's goal is to connect warehouse and corporate teams. The company's efforts to involve corporate employees in warehouse operations during Prime Day sales are a step towards achieving this goal.
- To boost its grocery delivery services, Amazon is encouraged corporate employees to volunteer at warehouses, engaging in tasks such as picking items, preparing carts, and packing boxes, showcasing the convergence of retail, technology, and business operations.
- With the expansion of its delivery services to 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural areas, Amazon aims to strengthen its position in the industry, catering to a wider range of customers in various sectors, including finance and technology, thereby solidifying its standing as a leading retailer in North America.
