Amazon reduces workforce dedicated to 'Buy with Prime' feature
Amazon's Buy with Prime team is undergoing a minor restructure, with over 30 employees being let go, sources within the company have confirmed. However, this decision does not indicate a lack of commitment from the e-commerce giant, as the program remains a top priority, an Amazon spokesperson stated.
Introduced in 2022 and expanded to US sellers a year ago, Buy with Prime offers Prime members the ability to shop on non-Amazon websites using their saved checkout details, and enjoy Prime perks like free, fast delivery and returns. The system has also been expanded through partnerships with BigCommerce, Shopify, and Salesforce. Recent updates to the service include live chat, streamlined returns, and order tracking.
The layoffs make up less than 5% of the Buy with Prime staff. Affected employees will receive their pay and benefits for at least 60 days, be eligible for a severance package, and have access to job placement support. Amazon aims to find new roles for everyone within the company, but if not possible, the company will support them in their next steps.
Despite these layoffs, the continuous need for development and expansion is highlighted by recent job postings for SDE II roles as part of a "Greenfield initiative," described as having "strategic significance and high exposure." Multiple positions were posted in April 2025, indicating ongoing investment in the Buy with Prime program.
Although no recent workforce reductions have been reported for the Buy with Prime team, Amazon has undergone significant downsizing in several other departments throughout the past year. Tens of thousands of employees have been laid off, with cuts announced for Prime Video and MGM Studios, Alexa, AWS, Twitch, advertising, and People Experience and Technology teams.
Aside from these layoffs, Amazon has also closed many of its brick-and-mortar locations. In November 2022, the company closed all its stand-alone bookstores and other non-grocery stores. Despite the closure of physical locations, Amazon has continued to invest in its grocery expansion.
While no direct information about expansion efforts with BigCommerce, Shopify, or Salesforce has been found, Amazon's job postings suggest ongoing investment rather than contraction in the Buy with Prime program. For official partnership updates, announcements from Amazon or partner platforms would be required.
