Amazon's Project Kuiper is making strides in the race for low Earth orbit broadband constellations. The initiative, which began in earnest in April 2025 with the successful launch of 27 production satellites, is designed to create a global network that will offer internet services worldwide[1][2].

The first batch of satellites was launched on an Atlas V rocket, and Amazon has secured launch contracts with multiple providers, including United Launch Alliance (ULA), ArianeGroup, Blue Origin (owned by Jeff Bezos), and SpaceX[2]. However, recent launch delays have been reported, with some SpaceX Falcon 9 missions intended for Project Kuiper experiencing weather-related setbacks as of early August 2025[5].

The initial internet service is expected to begin in late 2025[2]. To meet the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulatory deadlines, Amazon must have half of the constellation (1,618 satellites) in orbit by July 30, 2026, with full deployment by July 30, 2029[1][2]. To achieve these milestones, Kuiper will need to significantly accelerate satellite launches in the next year[4].

Regarding deployment outside Australia, Project Kuiper is intended as a global broadband network, with service availability planned for the United States and other international markets[1][2][3]. Although the focus on the Florida Space Coast for satellite processing and launch partnerships suggests a U.S.-centric operational base, the satellite constellation aims for global coverage[3]. There is no indication that the timeline or deployment is restricted or delayed specifically outside Australia; rather, Australia was an early country to signal service availability plans, with other territorial deployments following as satellites are launched and operational[2].

In Australia, Amazon's Project Kuiper faces competition from SpaceX's Starlink, which claims to have over 350,000 active customers[6]. In response, NBN Co, the operator of Australia's National Broadband Network, announced an alliance with Amazon to provide broadband services to remote users using Project Kuiper[6]. As of June 2025, 77,842 premises in Australia use NBN Co's satellite broadband service[7].

Amazon has not yet announced the price of its Project Kuiper services or revealed the final design for its user terminals. The two NBN Co satellites, which can serve over 300,000 premises in Australia, are expected to end their working lives around 2032[7].
