American tradition meets modern guitar design: PRS and John Mayer introduce innovative finishes for the acclaimed SE Silver Sky model, with additional Maple variations debuting as well.

In the world of electric guitars, the PRS SE Silver Sky has been making waves since its launch in 2022. Manufactured by the Maryland-based firm, PRS, this affordable version of a John Mayer model has been a hit among guitar enthusiasts, topping Reverb's best-selling guitar list multiple times[3].

Recently, PRS has announced four new colorways for the SE Silver Sky, adding a fresh twist to this popular guitar. The new colors - Derby Red, Trad Blue, Laurel Green, and Dandy Lion (a bright yellow) - are inspired by traditional American fashion, representing time-tested hues that have remained popular through decades[1][2][4].

These finishes were developed in collaboration with John Mayer, who emphasized their roots in longstanding American color traditions, giving the SE Silver Sky a fresh yet classic look while maintaining its heritage feel[1]. With these new colorways, the PRS SE Silver Sky looks more like classic Stratocasters than ever before.

The new colorways are not the only addition to the SE Silver Sky lineup. Previously rosewood-exclusive colorways of Moon White, Stone Blue, Summit Purple, and Nylon Blue are now available with maple fingerboards[5].

While PRS's strategy is not to dethrone Fender or Gibson from the top of the electric guitar hierarchy, they have been consistently releasing high-quality guitars that have been well-received by the music community. One such release is the PRS SE NF 53, which might be one of the best sub-$1K guitars of 2025[6].

In addition to the new colorways, the PRS SE Silver Sky retains its original recipe, including a poplar body, bolt-on maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, signature bird inlays, three 635JM "S" single coil pickups, 25.5" scale length, 8.5" fretboard radius, two-point steel tremolo, and vintage-style tuners[7].

Looking to the future, Paul Reed Smith has spoken about the possibility of making a headless guitar[8]. As PRS continues to celebrate its 40th anniversary, new builds are launched every month, keeping guitar enthusiasts on their toes.

The new PRS Silver Sky models are available now and priced at $849 apiece[9]. For those who appreciate traditional American fashion and the classic look of Stratocasters, the new colorways of the PRS SE Silver Sky offer an attractive and affordable option.
