The Mohegan Sun casino, one of the largest in the United States with over 300,000 square feet of gaming space, has implemented a sustainability program that has yielded impressive results. The casino, referred to as CAS, has partnered with Cimetrics for a decade to achieve these accomplishments.
Cimetrics' Analytika Pro solution was selected to manage over 2 million square feet of multi-purpose space at CAS. The solution analysed over 1,000 Analytika software algorithms to identify opportunities for reducing energy consumption, improving comfort, and decreasing operations and maintenance costs.
The program has resulted in substantial energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction. Annually, the casino saves $1,883,210 in energy costs, with a simple payback for these savings in just 0.1 years. The net present value of the project stands at $10,044,189.
The energy savings were achieved through various means. For instance, fixing leaking reheat valves in Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems resulted in an annual savings of 165 metric tons of CO2, equivalent to taking 1,500 cars off the road. Similarly, annual CO2 emissions were reduced by 7,000 metric tons through the overall emissions reduction program.
Vendor management was also verified to ensure the optimal sequence of operations in the building automation system (BAS). Systems monitored included 102 hot water and chilled water distribution pumps, 10 condenser water pumps, 6 boilers, 255 air handling units, and 606 terminal units.
Comfort improvements were made across over 1,000 guest rooms, the arena, and the gaming space. Predictive maintenance was initiated for valve and damper controls, and commissioning was done to optimize newly constructed area HVAC operations and identify flaws in temperature sensor calibration.
In addition to energy savings, the sustainability program has led to operational benefits and improvements in environmental stewardship. CAS has an aggressive recycling program, a large lighting retrofit project, and the installation of low flow water fixtures. The casino also boasts an arena, a cabaret theatre, meeting and function rooms, retail shopping, and over 1,000 guest rooms.
The Mohegan Sun's sustainability program is a testament to the casino's commitment to incorporating energy, operation, and maintenance reducing technologies to provide a major impact. Data was collected every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year, totaling more than 1.2 million data samples per day. This data-driven approach has been instrumental in achieving the casino's sustainability goals.
