Anticipated Q4 2024 Local Media Revenue for Sinclair Might Fall Short of Estimates

In a recent announcement, Sinclair, Inc. released preliminary unaudited Local Media segment fourth-quarter 2024 media revenues and certain media operating expenses. The company expects its Local Media segment media revenues to be between $931 million and $933 million for the three months ended Dec. 31, 2024.

The preliminary results indicate a slight decline in local broadcast-TV ad revenue for 2025, largely due to the post-election advertising normalization. Sinclair's distribution revenue for the fourth quarter of 2024 is expected to be between $392 million and $393 million, which is higher than expected. However, the company has not provided any new projections for 2025 local broadcast-TV ad revenue.

The decline in local broadcast-TV ad revenue is attributed to the elevated spending during the 2024 political election cycle, which inflated the prior year's numbers. Without the election, local broadcast TV and other traditional media are experiencing flat to slightly declining revenues, reflecting a challenging environment as advertisers continue shifting budgets toward digital channels.

Digital local advertising is projected to rise within the overall U.S. ad market, dominating more than 70% of total ad revenues by 2025 and increasing further thereafter. This shift in advertising trends puts pressure on traditional media, including local broadcast TV, which accounts for about 48% of local ad revenues in 2025 but faces long-term challenges from increasing digital ad dominance.

Sinclair's core (nonpolitical) advertising revenue for the fourth quarter of 2024 is expected to be between $300 million and $301 million, suggesting a weakening ad market. The company has not disclosed any new information about its media revenues or political advertising revenue.

Sinclair, Inc. will report its fourth-quarter 2024 earnings results at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025. A conference call to discuss the results will follow at 4:30 pm ET. The preliminary results are unaudited estimates only and are subject to revision.

Industry insights show local broadcasters are under pressure to innovate—particularly by adopting advanced measurement and targeting technologies (such as watermarking solutions) to better compete with digitally precise platforms like YouTube, Amazon, and Hulu. This is critical as over 50% of local station revenues come from retransmission fees, which face threats from cord-cutting trends.

In summary, the projections align with broader market dynamics showing an ongoing shift toward digital and data-driven advertising formats, pressuring traditional local broadcast TV ad revenues despite efforts to adapt. Sinclair's Q4 2024 earnings results provide a glimpse into this challenging landscape for local broadcast TV ad revenues in 2025.
