This strategy has proven effective, with 8 per cent of recent smart speaker purchases in the US being Apple's HomePod.
Amazon, with an ecosystem reaching 46 per cent of US households, has primarily expanded through smart speakers, displays, streaming media players, and tablets. However, the company's recent $2.5 billion FTC settlement serves as a reminder of the challenges in maintaining consumer trust and transparency as businesses grow and diversify.
Samsung's ecosystem reaches 50 per cent of US households, primarily through smartphones and smart TVs. The company's strategy focuses on providing a wide range of devices that work together seamlessly. Meanwhile, Google's ecosystem reaches 29 per cent of US households, centered on smart speakers and displays, with 18 per cent of recent smart speaker purchases being Google products.
The smart speaker market in the US is dominated by Amazon, with 60 per cent of recent purchases being Amazon-branded devices. Overall, 51 per cent of US internet households own a smart speaker and/or display. As these ecosystems continue to grow and evolve, companies like Apple, IKEA, McDonald’s, Zalando, and ChatGPT are reinforcing their ecosystems through services and platform control to intensify user loyalty and secure recurring revenue.
