Apple's First Smart Glasses Coming in 2027 Without AR Screen

Apple's first smart glasses, codenamed N50 and tentatively named Apple Glass, are set for release around 2027. Despite initial excitement, the device may not offer a seamless heads-up display (HUD) for digital interaction.

The smart glasses, part of the Apple Glass project, are designed to handle tasks like answering phone calls and taking photos independently, without the need for a connected smartphone. This is made possible by a powerful and efficient 2nm chipset, secured by Apple from TSMC. This chipset offers up to a 10% performance gain and up to 20% improved efficiency compared to TSMC's 3nm N3P process.

Contrary to earlier speculations, the smart glasses will not feature an augmented reality (AR) screen. Instead, they are expected to function more as a sophisticated iPhone companion, with a focus on comfort and lightness, thanks to the advanced chipset that allows for a less bulky thermal design.

Apple's smart glasses, expected to be officially unveiled in 2026 and launched in 2027, are planned to mirror the launch timeline of the Apple Vision Pro. This careful planning is aimed at providing ample time for developers to prepare for the new device. Despite the lack of a HUD, the smart glasses are expected to offer a range of useful features, leveraging the advanced 2nm chipset.
