Autonomous factory-to-door deliveries highlighted by Elon Musk as driverless tests commence
Tesla Achieves First Fully Autonomous Delivery in Texas
Tesla has made a significant stride in the realm of autonomous vehicles by completing the first fully driverless delivery of a Model Y from its Texas factory to a customer's home. This historic event took place on June 28, 2025, with no human inside the car or remotely controlling it during the trip [1][2][3].
The vehicle was recorded driving itself for 30 minutes, navigating highways at speeds up to 72 mph. This marks Tesla's first fully driverless delivery on public roads, aligning with Elon Musk's announcement of achieving full self-driving capability [1][2].
In preparation for the broader rollout of Tesla's Robotaxi service, the company has been actively mapping and testing Robotaxi Model Ys and Cybertrucks equipped with sensors in Austin, Texas [4]. These vehicles have been spotted with LiDAR-like devices and FSD validation equipment on their roofs.
It's worth noting that while Tesla has demonstrated this fully autonomous delivery, the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system commercially still requires human supervision during regular use. The wide availability of a true driverless product remains forthcoming [3].
The Robotaxi service is expected to expand in 2025, with invitations already going out for test rides in Texas [2]. This testing and autonomous delivery demonstrate significant progress toward Tesla’s aim to launch a self-driving Robotaxi service in Texas.
Meanwhile, in Australia, Tesla released a video showcasing its supervised full self-driving software in a Tesla Model 3 driving on Australian roads without any driver input. Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop based in Melbourne, was the one behind the wheel during the recording [5].
Riz Akhtar, a mechanical engineer with a passion for EVs, wants to help reduce transport emissions in Australia. Before starting carloop, he spent the first 7 years of his career building transport infrastructure [6].
