Bavaria's HyPipe Project Gets EU Nod, Launches Germany's Hydrogen Backbone
Bavaria's Hydrogen Hub project, HyPipe Bavaria, has taken a significant step forward. The European Union has classified it as a Project of Common Interest (PCI), and the Bavarian Minister of Economics and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, has granted it a planning permit. The project, led by bayernets GmbH and partners, aims to create a 300-kilometer hydrogen network set to operate in the early 2030s.
HyPipe one, the first expansion stage of the project, will utilize existing gas infrastructure to transport green hydrogen. The Bavarian government has approved the construction of the 15-kilometer-long pipeline, marking the start of the national hydrogen backbone network in Bavaria. Located near the Austrian border, this pipeline will enable a connection to hydrogen import corridors.
The entire 300-kilometer-long hydrogen network in Bavaria is scheduled for commissioning in the early 2030s. This project aims to supply the Bavarian chemical triangle with hydrogen, providing planning security for companies in the Burghausen and Ingolstadt regions and facilitating connection to international hydrogen import corridors.
The granted permit signifies the practical start of implementing the national hydrogen backbone network in Germany. HyPipe one, as part of this network, will play a crucial role in the supply and transport of green hydrogen, supporting the region's economic development and sustainability goals.
