Bluesky Unveils Major Updates to Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and Privacy Policies
Bluesky has unveiled significant updates to its community guidelines, terms of service, and privacy policies, effective October 15, 2025. The changes aim to enhance transparency, safety, and compliance with international regulations.
The platform has expanded its harm categories to align with various international regulations, including the UK Online Safety Act, EU Digital Services Act, and US TAKE IT DOWN Act. The Safety First principle now prohibits content depicting violence, encouraging self-harm, sexualizing minors, or violating privacy through unauthorized sharing of personal information.
The updated terms of service introduce notable changes to eligibility and age assurance sections, responding to online safety regulations such as the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, UK Online Safety Act, and EU Digital Services Act. Additionally, dispute resolution procedures have been strengthened to provide users greater control during disagreements.
The updated community guidelines introduce a progressive moderation model, with consequences ranging from content hiding to permanent bans or reports to authorities in extreme cases. The guidelines establish four core principles: Safety First, Respect Others, Be Authentic, and Follow the Rules.
Bluesky's comprehensive updates, announced on August 14, 2025, will take effect on October 15 following a community feedback period closing on August 28. These changes aim to improve user safety, transparency, and compliance with international regulations, demonstrating Bluesky's commitment to responsible online platforms.
