BYD announces that Yangwang will be entering the European market
BYD's High-End Yangwang Brand Set to Debut in Europe in 2025
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is gearing up to introduce its high-end sub-brand, Yangwang, to the European market in 2025. The brand, positioned above BYD's core brand and the Denza marque, is designed to compete with luxury brands like Bentley, Porsche, and Ferrari.
Three models have been proposed for the European market: the U9 super-coupe, U8L luxury SUV, and U7 Super-Saloon.
The Yangwang U9, launched in China in 2024, is a battery electric super-coupe designed by Wolfgang Egger. It boasts impressive specifications, including a Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes 17.9 seconds, making it the fastest Chinese serial production car. The U9 is equipped with over 1,200 horsepower and has a top speed of over 300 km/h.
The Yangwang U8L is a six-seat luxury SUV, building on BYD's e4 technology. It features four electric motors delivering over 1,000 horsepower and advanced body control systems. The U8L accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and has the ability to rotate 360 degrees on the spot and "float" on water.
The Yangwang U7 Super-Saloon is a sedan that accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and has 919 kW (1,250 PS) of power.
The launch timing in Europe is anticipated during or soon after 2025, aligning with BYD's broader strategy to penetrate the ultra-luxury vehicle market in Europe by introducing these high-performance electric models.
However, the EU's 2024 tariffs on Chinese-built electric vehicles could potentially increase prices for Yangwang vehicles in Europe. BYD Vice President Stella Li has confirmed plans to bring the Yangwang brand to Europe, but no official plans for the European market were confirmed at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
It remains unclear if Yangwang will price its vehicles to compete directly with luxury brands like Bentley or Ferrari or offer more affordable options. The launch of Denza, another BYD sub-brand, is set to occur before the arrival of Yangwang in Europe.
