BYD's Atto 1 Set to Revolutionize Australian EV Market as Cheapest Option Under $25,000

BYD, the Chinese automaker, is set to shake up the Australian electric vehicle (EV) market. The company's upcoming Atto 1 model is confirmed to be the cheapest electric car in Australia, potentially priced under $25,000 drive-away. This undercuts the current most affordable EV, the BYD Dolphin Essential, priced at $29,990 drive-away.

The Atto 1, a compact city hatch smaller than a Mazda 2, is scheduled to launch in November 2025 alongside BYD's luxury Denza and Atto 2 models. The entry-level Atto 1 variant will feature a single electric motor producing 55kW of power and 135Nm of torque. Its battery options include a 30.08kWh unit offering 220km of range, and a larger 38.88kWh battery providing up to 321km of range.

BYD Australia's chief operating officer has confirmed that the Atto 1 will be the most affordable electric car in the country by a significant margin. Range, a common concern among EV buyers, may still be an issue for some, with 60% of likely EV buyers citing it as a main concern or hesitation.

The BYD Atto 1, launching in November 2025, promises to make electric cars more accessible to Australian buyers with its competitive pricing. Despite potential range concerns, the Atto 1's affordability could significantly boost electric car adoption in Australia.
