Chinese automotive giant BYD has announced the launch of its latest RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) vessel, the BYD Xi'an. This new ship is expected to carry thousands of new energy vehicles (NEVs) from China to major European ports, including Belgium, the UK, Italy, and Spain, with potential routes extending to Australia.

The BYD Xi'an, with a capacity comparable to the BYD Shenzhen (~9,000 CEU), is part of BYD's expanding fleet of large car carriers serving international markets. The ship will be powered by LNG dual-fuel and may feature solar and shore power support, aligning with global green shipping standards.

The maiden voyage of the BYD Xi'an is expected to commence around mid to late 2025 or early 2026, following the commissioning and fitting out period. Voyages from China to Europe typically take 20-30 days depending on the port of call and stopovers.

Locally, BYD currently offers a growing lineup of electric vehicles, with half a dozen models available and around two new models added each year. The brand recently launched the BYD Shark 6 PHEV ute at the end of October 2024, priced at $57,900. The Sealion 7 SUV, launched in February, has helped BYD climb the sales charts, making it one of the top 5 best-selling EVs in Australia this year.

Thousands of BYD Shark 6 PHEV utes have been delivered since its launch, and some of the right-hand-drive vehicles on board the BYD Xi'an could potentially be destined for countries like Australia and New Zealand. BYD aims to have a fleet of eight vessels by next year, which will help the company deliver to multiple international markets, aiming for a shipping capacity of one million NEVs per year.

In Australia, the EV market is growing, with Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop, leading the charge. A mechanical engineer with a passion for EVs, Akhtar aims to reduce transport emissions in Australia. Recently, BYD offered Australia's lowest-cost EV with the BYD Dolphin hatchback, starting at $29,990. The brand's most affordable SUV, the Atto 2, is set to launch in Q4, promising to grow interest in its EVs further.

As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, companies like BYD are at the forefront of the transition, offering eco-friendly solutions for transportation. The launch of the BYD Xi'an is a significant step in this direction, demonstrating BYD's commitment to efficient and environmentally friendly transportation of NEVs to key global markets.

The Chinese automotive industry giant BYD's new RoRo vessel, the BYD Xi'an, will facilitate the transportation of new energy vehicles (NEVs) to European markets and potentially Australia, showcasing their commitment to the global energy sector. With the potential for thousands of BYD Shark 6 PHEV utes to be shipped to countries like Australia and New Zealand, the company is expanding its presence in the global technology sector, aiming to deliver one million NEVs annually to multiple international markets.
