Cable sports channel revival proposed by NBC in surprising move within sports media industry

NBCUniversal is set to debut a new sports-focused cable network this fall, according to recent reports. The planned network will primarily feature sports content currently available on NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, Peacock.

The new cable channel will include key sports content, notably NBCU’s newly secured NBA rights, part of a $2.5 billion annual deal starting this season. NBA games will air on both NBC’s broadcast network and Peacock, with the new cable channel providing an additional linear option for fans.

The distribution strategy for the channel is unique. It will be offered to cable and satellite providers as part of specialized sports channel packages, rather than broad cable bundles. This approach aims to cater to dedicated sports audiences who remain loyal to linear pay-TV services, even as overall cable subscription numbers decline.

The launch of the new cable network aligns with NBCUniversal’s plan to spin off most of its cable networks into a new entity called Versant. Simultaneously, it allows the company to capitalize on the profitability of live sports, a strategy that has proven successful in the past.

The new cable network serves as a complement to NBCU’s streaming efforts, rather than a competitor. It could potentially act as a safety net for NBCUniversal if its subscriber base doesn't grow as quickly as anticipated.

Peacock's subscription cost for its ad-supported tier increased to $10.99 a month, and for its tier with no commercials, it increased to $16.99 a month. Additionally, "Sunday Night Football" simulcasts are aired on Peacock, along with an exclusive NFL game carried only on the streaming service. Other sports offerings on Peacock include golf, college football, the Olympics, Premier League soccer, and the NBA starting in the fall.

The news about the new cable network comes months before NBC officially joins as a broadcast partner for the NBA. This move is expected to bolster NBCUniversal's sports programming and further solidify its position in the competitive sports broadcasting landscape.

The new cable channel, fueled by NBCUniversal's NBA rights, will integrate technology-enhanced sports content, creating an immersive viewing experience for fans. With the addition of this linear channel, sports enthusiasts can access their favorite games across multiple platforms, including Peacock and traditional cable services.
