Chery sub-brand introduces its initial offering in Australia – a PHEV large SUV under the name Omoda 9.
The Omoda 9, a new addition to the Australian market from Chery's Jaecoo sub-brand, is set to launch locally in August. This plug-in hybrid large SUV boasts impressive specifications that put it ahead of its competitors, particularly the Mazda CX-60.
Measuring 4775mm long, 1920mm wide, and 1671mm tall, with a 2800mm wheelbase, the Omoda 9 is slightly larger than the Mazda CX-60. Under the hood, it houses a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with three electric motors. Two of these motors power the front axle (75kW/170Nm and 90kW/220Nm), while one powers the rear axle (175kW/310Nm). This powerful setup delivers a combined output of 395 kW, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of just 4.9 seconds.
The Omoda 9's impressive performance is matched by its electric-only driving range of up to 169 km (NEDC cycle) and a total combined range of up to 1100 km. It supports DC fast charging at up to 70 kW, allowing a 30-80% charge in about 25 minutes.
In comparison, the 2025 Mazda CX-60 plug-in hybrid offers around 241 kW total power with 500 Nm torque from a PHEV setup that combines a petrol engine and electric motor. It features a smaller 17.8 kWh battery providing about 76 km of electric-only range. The CX-60 supports AC charging up to 7.2 kW, taking around 90 minutes for an 80% charge.
The Omoda 9 is priced at approximately AUD 61,990 (before on-road costs) for the high-spec Virtue variant, slightly undercutting the Mazda CX-60's starting price of approximately AUD 63,290 plus on-road costs.
Standard features for the Omoda 9 include 20-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED exterior lighting, a panoramic sunroof, a power tailgate, dual 12.3-inch screens, satellite navigation, wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 14-speaker Sony sound system, a 50W wireless phone charger, an inbuilt fragrance system, heated and ventilated front and outboard rear seats, a heated steering wheel, color-selectable cabin ambient lighting, 8x airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree camera, and more.
The Omoda 9 comes with an eight-year/unlimited km warranty, eight years of battery coverage, roadside assistance, and capped price servicing. This new plug-in hybrid SUV is due to arrive in dealers in August, promising to shake up the Australian market with its powerful performance, impressive range, and competitive pricing.
The Omoda 9's advancement in the Australian market, particularly in the automotive industry, is expected to be significant with its entering the competitive finance sector, considering its affordable price point and extensive features. In the realm of technology, the Omoda 9's superior electric-only driving range and fast charging capabilities set it apart from competitors like the Mazda CX-60, illustrating a keen focus on sustainable transportation solutions.
