In a noteworthy automotive milestone, the new 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS paced the Daytona 500 in February, becoming the first electric vehicle to assume the role. This was the 16th time Chevrolet served as the race pace car.

The Blazer EV SS, the quickest SS model ever produced by Chevy, is also the fastest vehicle in the brand's history. Its superb performance is particularly impressive given the Super Sport treatment's historic role in establishing Chevy as a leading American performance brand. In fact, the 2024 Camaro SS, a favorite among muscle car enthusiasts, trails the Blazer EV SS in terms of speed.

Staggering Speed and Tuned Performance

Thorough testing ensured the Blazer EV SS could withstand extreme conditions. Over 10,000 hours and 225,000 hours were spent on dynamometers, while the vehicle was put through rigorous testing in northern Michigan, southern Arizona, and snowy Colorado. The car's handling was further refined on the 32-mile Back of the Dragon route in North Carolina.

Marisa Cullens, chief engineer of the Blazer EV, emphasized the need for balance in the vehicle's ride—it had to be responsive and sporty yet not excessively stiff for daily driving. "You want to be able to drink your coffee on the way to work without spilling it," Cullens said.

The Blazer EV SS's launch mode, designed for adrenaline-pumping speed, could test the limits of even the most hardened drivers. In launch mode, the vehicle accelerates so quickly that your head snaps back, and engaging Wide Open Watts (WOW) mode provides an extra boost to performance.

With WOW mode active, the Blazer EV SS can hit 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.4 seconds, although it lags behind the Lucid Motors Air Sapphire's blistering 1.89-second 0-60 mph time. The cost contrast between the two vehicles is stark: $250,000 for the Lucid versus $62,490 for the Blazer EV SS with the performance package.

Innovation and Electric Power

The electrified Chevy Blazer EV SS underscores Chevy's commitment to developing electric vehicles. "There's some real opportunity there with EVs," said Scott Bell, Chevy's VP of global Chevrolet, alluding to the brand's expanding electric vehicle lineup.

Chevrolet has plans to introduce more all-electric vehicles, including the upcoming Silverado EV Trail Boss and the return of the Bolt EV. The SS version of the Blazer crossover adds an intriguing dimension of speed to the brand's EV offerings.

The Blazer EV SS's high-performance braking system, complete with Brembo brakes and 22-inch wheels, ensures safe stopping power. The vehicle offers an estimated range of 303 miles on a full charge in typical driving conditions, although using WOW mode can result in a decrease in range.

In addition to its impressive speed and range, the Blazer EV SS offers an appealing blend of performance, affordability, and practicality, making it a competitive contender in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
