Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Temu's Data Security Breaches and Deceptive Practices

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Temu, a popular shopping app on the app store, alleging serious data security breaches and deceptive practices. The complaint, filed by unidentified attorneys in an unknown U.S. state, claims widespread violations of multiple laws, including the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

The lawsuit accuses Temu of intentionally embedding malware and spyware in its common app, allowing it to collect excessive data, including biometric information, and access everything on users' phones. This is not the first time Temu's parent company, PDD Holdings, has faced such allegations. Previously, its app Pinduoduo was suspended from the Google Play Store due to malware.

The complaint also alleges that Temu misleads users about the scope of data collection and its use. Furthermore, it is accused of manipulating users to recruit friends through unfair and deceptive practices. Concerns are raised about data demands from the Chinese government, given PDD Holdings' base in China.

The lawsuit follows a similar case from September, which also alleged Temu's failure to secure customer data and wiretapping communications. It is one of two class action lawsuits currently facing Temu, both alleging data misuse and malware installation. The complaint mentions an ongoing congressional investigation into Temu's sourcing practices and compliance with the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.

The nationwide class action lawsuit against Temu highlights serious allegations of data security breaches and deceptive practices. As investigations continue, users are urged to be cautious about the data they share on such platforms.
