Combine HBO Max and Discovery+ into a Single Super-Streaming Platform

Business combination in the making: Initial aggregate purchase, followed by a company merge.

Combine HBO Max and Discovery+ into a Single Super-Streaming Platform

In the months following the big announcement of the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery, happening in 2022, execs dropped a bombshell during an earnings call. They hinted that it's only a matter of time before their top streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+, combine into a single, powerhouse entity.

JB Perrette, Discovery Streaming and International's president and CEO, stated that this merger could present a killer lineup for consumers, like a mouthwatering tech smorgasbord. He suggested the integration process might occur in stages: an initial phase where the two services are bundled, followed by a secondary phase where they're seamlessly merged into a single platform.

Perrette enthused that this move would yield substantial financial benefits and consumer satisfaction. He went on to say, "There will be tangible savings from consolidating into a single platform."

Now, bundling these streaming giants might sound intriguing, given their distinctive subscriber bases. HBO Max specializes in a blend of prestige dramas, docs, and comedies, while Discovery+ caters to more lighthearted content, such as home renovation shows, reality dating series, and, well, whatever Carole Baskin's Cage Fight is.

Despite some differences, executives from both merging parties seem rather chipper about the process thus far. And let's not forget the cheerful top brass at AT&T, who parted ways with WarnerMedia just three years after securing the Justice Department's approval for the deal.

Streaming takeovers have become the new normal in the competitive world of streaming, with big players venturing into each other's territories, retreating, and eventually trying to entice users with big-time bundle deals. At the end of the day, customers can only hope that their streaming subscriptions remain more affordable than good ol' cable.

As it turned out, the merger talks didn't quite go as initially planned. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) decided to rebrand HBO Max as Max in May 2023, bringing Discovery content onto the platform without merging Discovery+ entirely. Max offers a diverse range of content, melding HBO's originals with Discovery's factual and reality programming. The rebranding, implemented in the US in May 2023, continued in Latin America and Europe. However, despite the integration, Discovery+ remains a separate service, sharing some content with Max.
