Compact Action Camera Survives Unusual Brutality in Insta360 Go Ultra Review: Slashed by a Sword Yet Remains Intact

The Insta360 Go Ultra, produced by Chinese tech company Insta360, is making waves in the action camera market with its durable design and impressive video quality. Comparable to GoPro, this portable device offers a range of features that cater to adventurous individuals.

One of the standout aspects of the Go Ultra is its durability. The Action Pod, which houses the camera, can adhere to magnetic strips or ferromagnetic metal, making it a versatile companion for various activities. The camera's detachable design further enhances its versatility, allowing for numerous mounting options, including a magnetic clip and a necklace.

The Go Ultra boasts a 14.27mm focal length lens with an f/2.85 aperture, offering a wide-angle view. It can shoot up to 50-megapixel still photos and has a max 180Mbps bitrate, ensuring high-quality footage. The camera can record in both vertical and horizontal orientations by simply changing the position of the lens.

The Go Ultra's Pros include its lightweight nature, ability to record in 4K/60 fps, magnetic mount, durability, and fast charging. With fast charging, the camera can achieve up to 80% charge from empty in around 15 minutes. However, the camera's battery life is limited, lasting a little over 40 minutes when filming in 4K at 60 fps.

The camera's automatic FlowState stabilization does a good job even as the user is moving quickly or performing actions. The 'PureView' mode, while doing a fair job brightening up images in low-light scenarios, may show some noise when viewed on a PC.

The Go Ultra's Cons include a battery that doesn't last long and overheating issues, which can hinder battery life, especially when filming in high-resolution modes. Additionally, the camera does not come with any internal storage; it records to a microSD card that slots into the Action Pod.

Depending on the bundle purchased, the Standalone Camera housing can attach to a Quick Release Mount with traditional GoPro two-pronged threads, a tripod, and a Pivot Stand with a suction cap. It can communicate with the Action Pod up to about 30 feet away.

Interestingly, plans for DJI to launch its own pod-based action camera have been announced, potentially shaking up the market further. Despite the camera's impressive features, it's worth noting that the footage quality may not meet the expectations set by Insta360's promotional videos.

In conclusion, the Insta360 Go Ultra offers a durable, portable, and high-quality action camera experience. While it has some drawbacks, such as battery life and overheating issues, its versatile design, impressive features, and competitive price point make it an attractive option for action enthusiasts.
