South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang is bolstering its cybersecurity awareness with a proactive approach, focusing on minimizing impact and dwell time, especially from nation-state threats. The company's APAC regional team plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the Asian market.

Coupang operates under the assumption that breaches will occur and focuses on minimizing their impact. The team works closely with red, identity access management, and blue team functions within the security organization. Coupang prioritizes intelligence use cases like vulnerability intelligence, fraud detection, phishing domain takedowns, and strategic actor tracking. The company is investing heavily in proactive cybersecurity, leveraging AI and machine learning to make intelligence more actionable and reduce analyst workload. Commercial vendors are employed to monitor open sources, the dark web, and criminal marketplaces for threat intelligence.

The APAC regional team is indispensable for understanding and combating regional cyber threats, ensuring compliance with local laws, and managing the technical infrastructure. They handle incident response, form strategic partnerships, and promote cybersecurity awareness. Coupang is expanding its CTI team regionally, with plans to grow its presence in Taiwan. The threat management team, established in mid-2024, is responsible for threat intelligence, threat hunting, attack simulation, and detection engineering. Coupang's head of threat management, Tae Kim, shared insights on building a proactive, intelligence-led cybersecurity program.
