Customs Seize 16,000 Untaxed Cigarettes and Heets in Regensburg

Customs officers in Regensburg have made a significant seizure of untaxed tobacco products. The find, made during a routine check on the A6 near Amberg, involved a Bulgarian-registered truck bound for Ireland.

The truck, driven by an individual whose name has not been disclosed, was found to contain a substantial amount of cigarettes and tobacco heaters (Heets) hidden in various locations. Five plastic bags holding 76 packs of cigarettes and two packs of Heets were discovered above the driver's cab, while another four packs of cigarettes and three packs of Heets were found in a storage compartment of the trailer.

The seized items totalled 16,000 cigarettes and 1,000 Heets, with twelve different brands of cigarettes represented. The quantity far exceeded the duty-free limit for personal use, leading to an estimated tax loss of 3,274.75 euros. The driver initially claimed not to be carrying any goods subject to declaration or prohibited items.

The untaxed tobacco products have been confiscated, and a criminal investigation has been initiated against the driver for suspected tax evasion. The case is being handled by the customs authority in Furth im Wald.
