North Star's CSOVs Secure Cyber Resilience Classification: Setting a New Industry Standard

By John D. Doe

Celebrating a Cybersecurity Milestone

North Star's commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs), Grampian Kestrel and Grampian Eagle, have made history! They've bagged the prestigious Lloyd's Register (LR) Cyber Resilience classification, putting UK-based North Star at the forefront of the global maritime scene. This accolade marks them as the world's first vessels to achieve this recognition, according to LR.

Strengthening the Shield

This certification, following mandatory International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) standards set to be implemented for all newbuilds from 1 July 2024, bolsters the vessels' resistance against cyberattacks. It enables the ships to keep functioning under threat and bounce back swiftly from incidents, as noted by LR.

Launching into New Territory

As the first CSOVs in North Star's repertoire, both vessels are of the VARD 4 22 design, boasting innovative methanol-ready hybrid propulsion solutions. Earlier this month, the company received its first CSOV, Grampian Kestrel, which will be deployed on EnBW's He Dreiht wind farm in Germany. The second vessel, Grampian Eagle, is set to be delivered soon and ready to land a contract in July.

A Closer Look at Cyber Resilience

During the certification process, all critical systems on the CSOVs were evaluated against Lloyd's Register's Cyber Resilience criteria. This assessment encompassed vital technologies such as dynamic positioning software and the control systems connected to the Voith Schneider propulsion units.

Communicating in a Connected World

To boost onboard internet connectivity, the vessels feature Starlink systems. With the cyber resilience accreditation, North Star's workforce is better safeguarded from cyber threats without jeopardizing ongoing operations in the field, as LR explains.
