Cyber Threat to Solar Inverters Poses National Security Risk

Solar inverters, crucial for converting solar energy into usable electricity, face a significant cyber threat. Perth's Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre has warned of potential national security risks, with over half of Australia's internet-connected solar inverters vulnerable to foreign manipulation.

Solar inverters, essential in every solar panel installation, could be destabilised through cyber vulnerabilities. This could affect homes and businesses or even disrupt the entire electricity grid. The Centre recommends assessing all solar inverters sold in Australia for vulnerabilities and introducing cyber security ratings for these devices.

Chinese manufacturers hold around 70% of the world's solar inverter market, with prominent players including Huawei, GoodWe, and Sungrow. Senator James Paterson warns that these inverters could be weaponised by foreign nations. He criticises the current government for not mitigating the risk posed by vulnerable solar inverters.

One such company under scrutiny is GSL Energy, a Chinese company operating in the Australian solar inverter and energy storage market. With over 3 million Australian households having solar installations, the fastest-growing power generation type in the country, the potential impact of compromised inverters is substantial. The Centre suggests banning solar inverters with identified serious cyber vulnerabilities from retail sale in Australia.

The cyber threat to solar inverters is real and significant. With the majority of these devices being manufactured in China, and a substantial number of Australian households relying on solar power, the need for robust cyber security measures is urgent. Assessments, ratings, and potential bans are among the recommendations to mitigate these risks.
