The Austrian Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology has announced the expansion of an ambitious project aimed at connecting vehicles and infrastructure on the L631. The project, which was initially scheduled to run for 20 months, has been extended by an additional 12 months, making it a total of 32 months.

The project, developed by a consortium that includes the Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, PLANUM, VKG, IPAK, and KMG, is focused on creating a seamless connection between vehicles and infrastructure on the L631. The ultimate goal is to reduce traffic congestion and improve overall traffic efficiency on the heavily congested route.

The project's cost has been estimated to exceed 3 million euros, with 1.5 million euros covered by funding. However, the source of funding for the remaining project cost remains undisclosed.

The bridge closure on the A42 has been exacerbating congestion on the L631, making it an ideal location for data collection. Cameras and software analyze traffic around the clock, distinguishing between various vehicle types, and this data is used to optimize traffic light timings and make traffic flow smoother.

The project team is currently analyzing the data collected from the L631 to refine and improve the intelligent traffic system. In addition, they are considering implementing dynamic lane usage strategies to further optimize traffic flow on the L631.

The project is part of the EU Connecting Europe Facility program for regional mobility labs and digitalization from 2024 to 2026. The aim is to create a more efficient and smoother traffic flow on the L631, ultimately benefiting commuters and businesses in the region.

As the project progresses, updates and further details will be provided. The team remains committed to improving traffic flow on the L631 and reducing congestion, making travel on the route more efficient and enjoyable for all.
