Destiny 2's Recent Stir: The Controversial "Not White Enough" Shader

While the current state of Destiny is filled with large-scale issues and questions about its longevity, it's refreshing to delve into a lesser-known controversy, albeit a trivial one. This time around, it's the mini-event in Destiny that's causing a stir. To unlock the renowned Chatterwhite shader from Destiny 1, players must complete small tasks. Initially, there was an outcry about time-gating, but it soon became clear that players could bypass this restriction or wait three days for more challenges to open up on Friday.

But once players got their hands on Chatterwhite, a new controversy emerged. Contrary to popular belief, the Chatterwhite wasn't as white as some believed. On some outfits, there were areas with a light blue hue instead of pure white. This, as global community manager DMG pointed out, was how the original Chatterwhite looked. Chatterwhite was mostly white on various outfits, but not all. In fact, there was a shader that was whiter than Chatterwhite, known as Honors of the Nine, which had been in Destiny 2 since its inception. However, it required flawless completion in the Trials of the Nine, a mode no longer in existence.

Personally, as someone who appreciates the fashion side of Destiny, I have mixed feelings about shaders like Chatterwhite. They often result in Guardians dressed in pure white, which can be bland thanks to poor fashion sense among players. However, using them for individual pieces to create a look is fine. I abhor the trend of extreme all-black or all-white armor sets.

This controversy will likely lead to some form of change, but personally, I think this is a petty issue, a result of nostalgia-induced blindness.

After uncovering the true color variation of Chatterwhite, some Destiny 2 players expressed disappointment, as they expected a more pure white shade. Despite this minor controversy, the highly sought-after Chatterwhite shader still remains a coveted item in Destiny 2's loot pool.
