Detailed Insight into the 50 MW Byrd Ranch Storage Project Based in Sweeny
Byrd Ranch Storage Project to Boost Grid Reliability in Texas
The Byrd Ranch Storage Project, a 50 MW (AC) energy storage system, is under construction in Sweeny, Texas. This project, initiated by IHI Terrasun Solutions in partnership with GlidePath Power Solutions LLC in January 2022, is designed to provide backup power during periods of grid stress and prevent massive blackouts due to harsh weather conditions, particularly in response to the severe flooding event during Hurricane Harvey.
The project will utilize the most recent cutting-edge battery storage technology, equipped with control and safety systems to ensure reliable performance during emergencies. AI-driven algorithms will be used to enhance power delivery and reliability, matching the requirements and opportunities in the existing Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market.
The Byrd Ranch Storage Project comes with a 10-year warranty and maintenance services package. It is one out of more than 70 innovative standalone storage and solar-plus-storage projects in GlidePath's 12 GWh development inventory across 20 U.S. states.
Design plans for the Byrd Ranch Storage Project address the issues of minimizing sound and visual effects on the environment, identifying and protecting sensitive animal species and their habitats, and securing the facility from extreme weather conditions. The project is expected to generate approximately $500,000 annually in property taxes, supporting local schools and services.
Jamal Burki, President of IHI Terrasun Solutions, expressed excitement about working with GlidePath and on ERCOT schemes. Chris McKissack, the CEO of GlidePath, expressed pleasure about breaking ground on the Byrd Ranch Storage Project, which is focused on addressing current grid reliability issues in Texas.
Meanwhile, another significant addition to Texas's energy infrastructure, the Energy Vault's Cross Trails BESS Project, became fully operational in June 2025. This 57 MW / 114 MWh battery energy storage system supports the ERCOT market by enhancing renewable energy integration and grid reliability. The project secured $18 million in project financing and is backed by a 10-year energy offtake agreement with Gridmatic, providing stable long-term revenue.
These projects underscore the growing importance of energy storage systems in maintaining grid stability and integrating renewable energy resources in Texas and beyond.
