Digital Art Exhibition Kicks Off at AKM in Istanbul

(A wild ride through the digital art landscape of Istanbul with the fifth Istanbul Digital Art Festival)

The Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) is once again the central stage for the digital art revolution as the fifth Istanbul Digital Art Festival (IDAF) unfurls its life-infused tapestry. Building upon its humble beginnings, IDAF—Türkiye's first and only globally acclaimed digital art festival—now stands tall as an international cultural beacon.

Culture and Tourism Deputy Minister Batuhan Mumcu once called this festival a reflection of our times, a space to question, explore, and reinvent our digital transformation through artistic expression. And this year, the theme is Connecting, emphasizing the intricate dance of humans and technology.

Entrepreneurial hurdles and skepticism swathed IDAF in its infancy. However, through sheer perseverance, the festival has soared to the international level in just five short years. Festival Director Dr. Nabat Garakhanova proudly stated that the journey has been arduous, yet the rewards are abundant. The festival's growth can be traced from its modest beginnings with ten artists to this year's event featuring 80 visionaries from around the world.

Hale Yıldırım, Vice President of the Digital Art Association, shared that the association sprang to life from the spirit of the festival itself. They aim to spearhead the dialogue on digitalization's impact on art, offer a platform for technology-based works, and expand social awareness about this burgeoning art form.

So, what does this year's IDAF have in store? Let's dive in!

From The Dance of the Moment—a mesmerizing State Folk Dance Ensemble performance—to a mind-bending music concert by the Monster Game Music Orchestra, the evening pulsed with digital art's beating heart. The grand finale: Tonochrome—an electrifying collaboration by SB50 Studio that fused art, technology, and music in a symphony of colors and sounds.

Looking beyond its nightly spectacles, IDAF offers much more. Expect to immerse yourself in a diverse range of exhibitions, workshops for children and youth, digital art shows, theater performances, robot demonstrations, panel discussions, and live shows.

This year's lineup of curators leaves no stone unturned, with Rahim Ünlü, Niyazi Erdoğan, Samed Karagöz, Evgeniya Romanidi, and Avind—Turkey's first AI curator—all contributing their unique perspectives to this digital art extravaganza. And, did someone mention an AI-generated artwork based on millions of images from Anadolu Agency's visual archive? Yes, you heard right!

IDAF welcomes one and all to its free-of-charge celebrations across a wide spectrum of artistic disciplines, extending a warm embrace to artistic trailblazers and tech pioneers alike. Long live the dance of humans and technology under the Istanbul sky!
