The Center for Data Innovation has responded to a request for information from the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), outlining specific actions to build a robust data ecosystem that supports a strong bioeconomy in the United States.

The focus is on federal Research and Development (R&D) funding coordination and strategic guidance, with OSTP expected to lead cross-agency coordination and strategy development for federal science and technology investments. OSTP should treat data more like software or infrastructure and provide datasets with the routine maintenance afforded to other public goods.

In addition, the Center recommends that OSTP address any challenges or obstacles in the implementation of the previous recommendations and review and evaluate the progress of the previously recommended actions.

By developing, coordinating, and implementing a unified data ecosystem strategy, OSTP can maximize its impact on bioeconomy growth through structured federal R&D investment targeting data infrastructure and sharing, cross-government collaboration to integrate data across agencies relevant to the bioeconomy, and strategic alignment of budget and research priorities to foster data use in bioeconomic development.
