Discussions ongoing within the US Secret Service regarding the acquisition of off-road vehicles, driven by two significant factors.
The US Secret Service is teaming up with General Motors Defense to develop a new range of off-road vehicles, designed with a focus on enhanced multi-terrain capability and a less conspicuous appearance. These vehicles are intended to provide better mobility off-road and blend in more effectively in various environments, such as regions like Africa.
In a shift from their previous vehicle strategy, the Secret Service is building these purpose-designed vehicles from the ground up, customized for their protective mission and specific environmental conditions. The new vehicles may be based on or inspired by GM Defense’s military-grade platforms, known for rugged off-road performance.
According to Secret Service director Sean Curran, these vehicles are not intended to replace the presidential limousine, but to supplement the fleet where large armored SUVs are impractical or too conspicuous. The design and development details remain classified due to security concerns, but the emphasis is on seamless integration and bespoke solutions to meet the agency's evolving mobility needs.
The process of supplying government vehicles has changed, with GM Defense now building dedicated cars from the ground up instead of modifying civilian vehicles. This approach allows for a closer collaboration between GM Defense and the US Secret Service in the design and production of the vehicles.
Director Curran emphasized the importance of off-road capabilities for the new vehicle platform. The President is always accompanied by the US Secret Service, and these new vehicles are crucial for ensuring their safety in various terrains.
The nature of these new vehicles remains a closely guarded secret, but it is clear that they will offer improved off-road performance and a lower profile suited for international deployments, enhancing current protective vehicle capabilities while fitting discreetly into various terrain and threat environments.
