Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson Launches Urban Ocean Lab for Coastal Climate Resilience

Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, a renowned marine scientist and climate expert, has co-founded the Urban Ocean Lab (UOL), a think tank dedicated to the future of coastal cities in the face of climate change. With one in seven Americans living in coastal cities threatened by sea level rise and intensifying storms, UOL's work is crucial.

UOL, established by Dr. Johnson, Dr. Anne Lusk, and Ingrid Giskes, focuses on developing policy-oriented solutions for coastal cities grappling with climate change. Their key activities include research and policy development, cooperation and exchange, and raising public awareness. The ocean, which absorbs about one-third of climate solutions needed, holds immense potential. Regenerative ocean farming can support food security, absorb carbon, and protect shorelines. Recent global efforts include the World Trade Organization's Fisheries Subsidies Agreement and the 'high seas treaty' for biodiversity protection. However, less than 3% of the global ocean is fully protected, highlighting the need for more action.

UOL's vision is to help coastal cities become resilient and sustainable despite climate challenges. With the ocean absorbing 30% of carbon pollution and 90% of heat trapped by greenhouse gases, protecting and sustainably using it is vital. UOL's work, along with global initiatives, aims to weave together ocean protection, cultural preservation, and climate action for a Blue Renaissance.
