Drones Ain't Just for Fun: Chillin' Inmates Get Busted

Looks like the inmates at that federal slammer in New Brunswick thought they were flyin' under the radar, but they got caught with a half-million bucks worth of illicit goodies thanks to a suspicious drone drop.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC), the guys in charge of keeping the peace, confirmed that a drone was indeed involved in the debacle on Thursday. But here's a twist - they didn't manage to nab the drone itself.

The package full of nasties like meth, weed, and smokes was discovered just beyond the Dorchester Penitentiary perimeter on June 2. The CSC spilled the beans, stating that the goods also included shatter and nicotine patches.

The loot's estimated value within the penitentiary walls adds up to a cool $534,100, the CSC reported.

When inmates loiter on the wrong side of the law, the gang at CSC steps up their game for the safety and security of the institution, staff, other dudes done wrong, and the public. They work hand-in-glove with the cops to lay charges, but in this case, none were necessary.

Last month, another drone drop went down at the Springhill Institution in Nova Scotia.

FYI: Drone drops in Quebec have raised eyebrows. Seems like authorities have been busy spotting 274 drones hovering around correctional facilities between January and March 2025, with 195 of 'em carrying sacks fulla contraband. They managed to crack down on 134 of those suspicious packages.

Cool factoid: Quebec's government is stepping up their game to prevent such shenanigans, building fences around windows and using body scanners to sniff out contraband. Similar moves have been made in federal penitentiaries like Drummond Institution, although nothing specific about drones has been explicitly mentioned.

Join our crusade to stomp out contraband smuggling by keeping tabs on CSC's technology-backed safety measures. They're busy investing in tools like ion scanners and drug-sniffin' dogs to keep everything on the up and up.

  1. The suspicious drone incident at the Dorchester Penitentiary, where illegal goods like meth, weed, and tobacco were delivered, further emphasizes the need for updated technology in combating contraband smuggling.
  2. As technology advances, Correctional Service Canada is investing in tools such as ion scanners and drug-sniffing dogs to maintain security, following the increasing number of drone sightings delivering contraband in facilities like the Drummond Institution.
