Drone Disruptions: Munich Airport Cancels Flights, Europe on Alert

Munich Airport, located in Europe, faced significant disruption on Wednesday evening due to reported drone sightings. The incident led to over 30 flight cancellations and diversions, stranding nearly 3,000 passengers. The Federal Police at Munich Airport and the Bavarian State Police worked together to handle the situation, as announced in their joint press release.

The drone sightings in Munich are part of a wider trend across Europe. Airports in Denmark, Norway, Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Munich have all suspended flights due to unidentified drones in recent times. These incidents have raised fears of potential Russian involvement, with Germany and Denmark both raising the alarm. Moscow, however, has denied any connection to these events.

In response to these threats, Denmark has accepted Sweden's offer of anti-drone technology. The United States is also sending anti-drone defences to Denmark. Meanwhile, the German government is planning to allow its army to shoot down drones if necessary. Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder has suggested that police should also have this power.

The European Union is taking these threats seriously. EU heads of state recently met to discuss bolstering the bloc's defences, with plans to establish a 'drone wall'. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Europe that Russia is looking to escalate its aggression.

The drone sightings at Munich Airport highlight the growing concern over drone threats across Europe. While Russia denies involvement, governments are taking steps to enhance their defences. The German and Danish governments have raised the alarm, and the EU is discussing collective measures to bolster its security. The incident in Munich serves as a reminder of the potential disruption and safety risks posed by unidentified drones.
