Report: Suspicious drones spotted over MV recently - Drones Cause Alarm in Northern Germany: 68 Incidents in 2025
Drones have been causing concern in northern Germany, particularly in coastal states. Recent sightings over military facilities, ports, and even civilian areas have increased, with over 68 incidents reported in the first half of 2025 alone.
Last week, drones were spotted in Sanitz and over the Marine Command in Rostock. These incidents affected offshore wind farms and military facilities. This is not an isolated occurrence. Since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, reports of drone sightings related to the Bundeswehr have significantly increased and stabilized, with hundreds of suspected overflights in recent years.
On Monday, several large drones moved together over the port of Rostock. Authorities, including the Bundeswehr, Bundespolizei, and Landespolizei, are coordinating to track and respond to these incidents. Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack confirmed this close cooperation. Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) warned that such threats do not respect national borders, particularly affecting northern coastal states.
Drones have also flown over a power plant in Kiel, the university hospital, and the U-boat shipyard TKMS in Schleswig-Holstein, disrupting air traffic in Denmark several times last week. In the first half of 2025, 68 incidents related to unmanned aerial systems were registered by the police in MV, with four being reportable nationwide.
These drone overflights highlight the need for enhanced security measures and international cooperation. Authorities are working together to monitor and respond to these incidents, ensuring the safety of citizens and critical infrastructure.
