Dune: Awakening, not yet officially released, has accrued almost a hundred thousand players.

Dune: Awakening is a Survival MMO that's yet to officially drop, but we're in the thick of the advanced access period, a five-day window exclusively for those rocking the $70 Deluxe or $90 Ultimate editions. And boy, has Arrakis seen a rush of new inhabitants! As soon as the game went live, Dune: Awakening welcomed almost 100,000 players[1], busy as beavers, establishing outposts, zipping around on speeders, scaling cliffs, and sidestepping those dreaded sandworms.

It's a steaming start, and there's more to come! Weekend wool-gatherers and those who'll join the fray on Tuesday, June 10, when the $50 base edition hits the scene. Oh, and we reckon that horde is where most of Dune's players will materialize.

As for bignumbers, we won't guess the bloom's final tally because, let's be honest, we stumble more often than we stride when it comes to these prophecies. But it's shaping up to be a solid start[1].

There's no smooth sailing without a few bumps in the road, though. Ships have been going down, performance has been sluggish for some, and servers have faltered. Yet, the developers are swift with remedies[1], able to quell server issues on their Discord channels.

The game's Steam review score is "Mixed," but it ain't long ago it was "Mostly Negative." Players frustrated by connection problems or crashes are quick to vent, while the content and crash-free often prefer to stick around on the deserts of Dune[1].

What does the future hold for Dune: Awakening? We'll find out over the next few days and into next week, when the official launch takes place. Care to join me in the dunes? Be cautious among the canyons; those sandworms aren't known for their jokes[1].
