Electric motorbike jolts with electric shocks: Can-Am duo affected
The Can-Am Pulse, a new electric motorcycle from Canadian brand Can-Am, is making waves in the city motorcycling scene. With a starting price of 12,899 euros, it competes with the BMW CE 04 and the retro electric bike Maeving RM1S, both of which offer similar performance and range.
One of the standout features of the Can-Am Pulse is its infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay. This can be accessed via a USB port and controlled with buttons on the left handgrip. The bike also features an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and motorcycle traction control (MTC) for added safety.
Despite its premium price, the Can-Am Pulse is surprisingly easy to handle, weighing only 177 kilograms. It boasts a BRP-Rotax E-Power electric motor, developed specifically for electric motorcycles, and a battery with a capacity of 8.9 kWh, providing up to 130 kilometers of range according to the WMTC cycle.
The Can-Am Pulse resembles a naked bike, with a seat height of 784 millimeters, making it accessible for smaller riders. It can reach highway speed from a standstill in 3.8 seconds and has an electronically limited speed of 129 km/h.
The bike's suspension includes a Kayaba upside-down fork at the front and a Sachs coilover twin-tube shock absorber at the rear, providing a relatively firm setup that maintains stability at higher speeds.
Active braking on the Can-Am Pulse can be achieved by twisting the throttle forward to increase the strength of regenerative braking. The bike also has only one brake lever that operates the mechanical brake, and the rear wheel is decelerated using engine braking.
Regenerative braking can also be defined by users for passive energy recovery. However, during testing, the 10.25-inch display, which is supposed to be a touchscreen, was unresponsive to touch attempts.
The Can-Am Pulse does not offer the easy on and off like a scooter, but quick mounting is still possible. It also lacks storage space for a helmet or luggage, but it does have a practical glove box on the 'tank' and a compartment for a smartphone in the lid.
In conclusion, the Can-Am Pulse is a premium electric motorcycle that offers a combination of performance, safety features, and a unique design. While it may be more expensive than some alternatives, its features and capabilities make it an attractive option for city riders.
