A Larger Battery Lets the Top Model Cruise Over 100 Kilometers on Electric Power Alone! Perfect for Business Commuters, Family Fathers, and Eco-conscious Drivers.

Hark back to the 1930s, and the Czech car company named its flagship model after the Superb. In 1949, the new Communist leaders deemed the model too Western and too expensive, leading to its demise. But half a century later, the new German parent company Volkswagen saw potential and brought the grand mid-size sedan back, under the name Superb. This skin-of-the-teeth survival story is the subject of this revamped, forward-moving piece.

We have seen several generations of the Superb, with the VW Passat playing a significant role as a gene donor in the engine and interior. Yet, the Czech company has always managed to maintain its distinct identity, with clever details that make the Superb a true Skoda.

Step into the future with the new Superb model, outfitted with cutting-edge technology from Volkswagen. It's a significant leap towards an electrified Skoda lineup, even though the Czech Republic already boasts fully electric and successful electric cars like the Enyaq. The eagerly awaited SUV models, Enyaq and the Elroq, are coming soon, leaving the Superb to lead the charge in part-time electric driving for now.

The Superb iV isn't a fully electric car, but its plug-in hybrid system provides a powerful punch. Together, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and an 85 kW electric motor seamlessly deliver 150 kW/204 PS. However, the true star of the show is the battery—now boasting an impressive 27.5 kWh—more than double that of its predecessor. The gasoline engine takes a back seat as the battery comfortably handles commuting distances of more than 100 kilometers on electric power alone.

With development taking place alongside the new generation of VW Passat, cost-saving measures were certainly in play. However, this partnership offered benefits for both brands. VW customers will take notice of the increased space in the VW Passat, as it now boasts the same dimensions as the Skoda Superb. The Superb, on the other hand, has grown by 4 centimeters to 4.90 meters in length, adding to its imposing presence. This slight expansion has also provided more legroom in the rear for a comfortable ride.

Aesthetic changes include slimmer main headlights and taillights, as well as Crystallinium, a colored crystalline element that gives an eye-catching, three-dimensional look to the LED matrix headlights. The Superb iV remains recognizable as the iconic model despite these updates.

Safety and Assistance Systems gain an upgrade with the Series-standard front radar responsible for emergency braking and predictive cyclist protection. In addition to known features like cross traffic alert, lane assist, and adaptive cruise control, curve and intersection assistants are newly added to the lineup. A total of ten airbags, including a central airbag, provide added protection for passengers.

The driving experience in the Superb remains refined and reliable, with a few changes being made to the interior. The shift lever has been replaced by a smaller control unit next to the steering column, increasing front-seat legroom. Once drivers get accustomed, they'll find it a welcome improvement.

A 10.25-inch display offers essential driving data, while the large central screen has grown from 8 to 13 inches.

Adaptive Suspension undergoes further development, using independently controlled valves for each shock absorber to regulate compression and rebound separately. This allows for faster responses and smoother rides, although it comes at an additional cost.

In operation, the iV system runs smoothly in the background. The driver can choose between electric mode, hybrid mode, and adjust the charging level with the help of the combustion engine. This is particularly helpful when traveling through environmental zones.

In a nutshell, the Skoda Superb is a modern, driver-friendly sedan that offers a stylish, part-time electric driving experience. It may be just the thing to lure those in search of an SUV alternative back to the sedan fold. By remembering to charge, drivers can enjoy eco-friendly commuting in the new Superb iV.
