Electric Vehicle Home Charging: A Mixed Bag in 2025

Electric vehicle (EV) owners are experiencing a decline in satisfaction with home charging, according to J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study. The average amount spent on home charging in the past 30 days increased to $58, down $2 from the previous year, leading to a drop in satisfaction with the cost of charging to 698.

The study, conducted in collaboration with PlugShare, a leading EV driver app and research firm, evaluates the home charging experience for EV owners across all three charging segments. The U.S. EVX Home Charging Study serves as the industry benchmark for measuring satisfaction with key attributes that define the overall EV home charging experience.

Despite the challenges, trends in EV home charging are moving towards smarter, more integrated solutions. Adoption of smart charging infrastructure that allows users to monitor and optimize charging via mobile apps is on the rise, along with efforts to integrate renewable energy sources into charging points.

However, connectivity issues persist as fragmented charging infrastructure and inconsistent standardization can impair customer experience and equitable access, especially in residential settings. Effective connectivity is critical for enabling smart chargers that communicate with users’ devices and grid operators. Nearly one-third (31%) of problems with Level 2 permanently mounted chargers stem from internet/Wi-Fi connectivity problems and charger app malfunctions.

Charging speed remains critical to the customer experience for EV owners. Level 2 portable chargers have a satisfaction score of 714, while Level 2 permanently mounted chargers score 733. Access to Level 2 charging at home is a key driver of overall EV satisfaction. Tesla ranked highest among Level 2 permanently mounted charging stations, with a score of 776. Emporia followed closely behind with a score of 763, while Wallbox secured third place with 756.

Home charging remains important to EV owners due to its convenience, but concerns about charging speeds, cord length, and rising electricity costs are affecting overall satisfaction. Consumers are showing signs of fatigue with rising electricity prices, particularly in regions with high electricity costs like the West Coast and Northeast, where satisfaction scores are significantly lower than in other regions.

To maintain momentum in Level 2 charger adoption, the industry should reinforce the benefits and address barriers that may be slowing adoption. As electricity prices increase, EV owners may seek to charge during off-peak hours or use optimizations via smart chargers to minimize expenses. Dynamic pricing models combined with user preferences are prompting the development of integrated systems that balance affordability and accessibility.
