Researchers in Germany are set to launch a five-year project aimed at attracting more young people to physics and related fields. The University of Dortmund is set to collaborate with the Institute for School Development Research (IFS) in this undertaking, which combines peak research and social responsibility.

The project, a novelty in education research, aims to enhance educational equity, as girls and students from disadvantaged backgrounds are underrepresented in fields like physics, chemistry, and computer science. It also seeks new approaches to address the talent shortage in the natural sciences.

The study will conduct an intervention in selected schools to discover the most effective ways to inspire students, particularly in physics. The project has been chosen as one of several and will receive federal and state funding as international peak research from 2026, as part of an "excellence cluster."

Education researcher and IFS director, Nele McElvany, explained that many students find physics uninteresting and irrelevant to their lives, and the project aims to challenge these perceptions. It will work with positive role models from underrepresented groups to inspire students and highlight the benefits of physics for their own lives. The study will also optimize subject texts for better comprehension by students.

The project will begin in the ninth grade in 45 schools in Berlin, Bavaria, and Saxony-Anhalt. It will follow students until graduation, with at least one follow-up survey planned afterward. The study's results for physics could then be transferred to other subjects and integrated into teaching, potentially leading to more students developing their potential and counteracting the shortage of skilled workers.

The project is a collaborative effort involving TU Dortmund, universities in Halle and Regensburg, and the FU Berlin.

No publicly available information was found about a five-year research program specifically titled the "XL Project" combining "peak research and social responsibility" to attract youth to physics. However, there is an astrophysics project called XL-Calibur that is an advanced X-ray telescope primarily focused on scientific discovery in high-energy physics. This project does not seem to involve a broader five-year program targeting social responsibility or youth outreach.
