EPRI Launches GridFAST to Streamline US Electric Vehicle Grid Planning
EPRI has launched GridFAST, a new online portal designed to streamline communication between fleet operators, charging providers, and the US' 3,200 electric utilities. The platform aims to address the challenges related to grid interconnections and differing utility processes.
Historically, grid planning for new electrical loads has been a lengthy process compared to the procurement of new electric vehicles (EVs). GridFAST aims to bridge this gap by providing a standardized platform for all parties involved.
The portal allows customers to find the relevant utility and point of contact for any project location in the US. They can also enter preliminary site information for projects years in advance, giving utilities time to plan for the aggregate impact of customer loads. This proactive approach helps utilities better manage their grids and avoid potential issues down the line.
GridFAST enables customers to right-size their charging needs, taking into account a utility's existing grid capacity and any EV-related news they offer. The platform provides standardized information about these programs across utilities, making it easier for customers to navigate the complex landscape of electric vehicle charging.
Several utilities and charging operators have signed on to GridFAST's Guiding Principles, including Ameren, CenterPoint Energy, and Southern California Edison. Pitt Ohio's VP of Vehicle Maintenance and Fleet Services, Taki Darakos, praised GridFAST for its standardization and ease of use in interacting with multiple utilities.
GridFAST, developed by the team behind GridLAB-D and officially released in 2019, is poised to revolutionize the way utilities, charging providers, and fleet operators communicate and collaborate. By addressing the challenges of grid interconnections and providing standardized information, GridFAST is set to improve the efficiency and reliability of the electric grid as EV adoption continues to grow.
