European Pet Owners Prioritize Sustainability in Food Choices, Driving Industry Shift

A study by Amcor reveals that European pet owners are increasingly prioritising sustainability when choosing pet food. Packaging plays a significant role in their purchasing decisions, with 69% considering it a key factor.

Amcor's research indicates that consumers trust claims about recyclability the most, followed by 'less plastic' and 'less packaging'. This has led major pet food brands like Mars Petcare and Nestlé Purina to adopt Amcor's innovative packaging solutions. These include the AmLite HeatFlex Recycle-Ready Pouch for wet pet food and the AmPrima portfolio for dry food.

The study also shows that over one in five pet owners now buy nutritional supplements for their pets. Despite economic pressures, 32% have maintained their pet food budget, prioritising quality and sustainability. This is reflected in the 76% of pet owners who consider product sustainability when making a purchase, with 69% valuing sustainable packaging. Furthermore, 20% of pet owners have switched to healthier food for their cats in the past year.

Amcor's findings highlight the growing importance of sustainability in the pet food industry. With only 15% of consumers unaffected by packaging claims, brands are increasingly focusing on sustainable packaging solutions to meet evolving consumer preferences and maintain a competitive edge.
