European Video Game Industry Introduces Pan-European "Seize the Controls" Campaign for Parents and Guardians Prior to Christmas 2024
The video game industry in Europe is taking a significant step forward with the launch of the 2024 "Seize the Controls" campaign. This initiative, led by Video Games Europe, aims to remind parents of the tools available to manage video gameplay for their families.
According to Simon Little, CEO of Video Games Europe, 95% of parents and families have agreements in place and supervise in-game purchases. Recent research supports this, with 76% of the parents of children who play games stating that their children do not make in-game purchases, and 95% of parents of children who do buy in-game extras actively monitoring their children's spending.
The campaign is promoted by member trade associations and companies, and it is being conducted in various countries across Europe. These include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. In each country, the campaign has a unique name, such as "Gemeinsamspielen" in Austria, "Speel Het Slim | Jouez Malin" in Belgium, and "Ask About Games" in the UK.
The parental guidance tools, available on members' games and devices, include the management of playtime, access to age-appropriate games, privacy, and purchases. Simon Little emphasizes that these tools can encourage responsible gameplay.
The "Seize the Controls" campaign website provides five useful tips for managing video gameplay. These include checking PEGI age ratings, using parental guidance tools, and encouraging parents to play games with their children.
Since 1998, Video Games Europe has been advocating for a responsible games ecosystem and supporting the sector's creative and economic potential. The organisation publishes an annual Key Facts report with the latest data on Europe's video games sector, which can be found at https://www.videogameseurope.eu.
The European video games sector is worth €25.7bn, and 53% of Europeans are video game players. With the "Seize the Controls" campaign, parents can ensure a positive and enjoyable video game experience for the whole family.
