Experience Mario Kart World: An Ideal Debut Game for Nintendo Switch 2

Revamped Racing Fun: Mario Kart World on Switch 2

I've dabbled in far too many rounds-if you believe me, it's probably more than anyone should-of Mario Kart. With over a decade of playing every whacky kart racer since the initial Super Mario Kart on SNES, and now moving ahead to the explosive Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch, I'd hardly call myself an ace. Yet, I keep returning for more, digging the unpredictable thrill that Mario Kart delivers every single time. The new Mario Kart World on Switch 2 is no exception.

Just last week, Nintendo invited us to mess around with the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World for a whopping eight hours. Granted, we barely scratched the surface of what this game offers, but boy, was it an enjoyable ride! The launch title maintains the familiar dynamics to make sure even newcomers can jump in and start flying items at their opponents, but it's packed with enough fresh features to keep veterans interested.

Before we dive into our comprehensive review, let's consider this a detailed first impression.

The heart of Mario Kart World remains unchanged. Choose your favorite Nintendo character, select a kart or bike, and join the chaotic race against competitors in modes such as Grand Prix, versus, or battle mode. What's so addictive about Mario Kart is how unpredictable it gets when ramped up. A simple item like a blue shell, which homes in on the leader, or a Super Star that grants temporary invincibility and lets you pummel your opponents can turn a losing game around. The perfect mix of skill and item tactics makes the series neither too challenging for noobs nor dull for experts.

In Mario Kart World, Nintendo's carefully ratcheted up the excitement. By doubling the number of racers from 12 to 24, the insanity on the racetrack has a whole new level. I'm partial to the redesigned characters and their snazzy outfits and vehicles to unlock. Honestly, I'm head over heels for some of the '80s-inspired garb and vehicles-there's a bike that looks like an antique Sony boombox. And, of course, how could I not adore the addition of Cow (from the Moo Moo Meadows track) as a playable character? This bovine BFF is bound to become an overnight sensation on the internet.

In free-roam mode, the world appears to be alive, brimming with NPC racers and items to collect. While the Grand Prix brings all-new cups consisting of four races, and Battle Mode (Balloon Battle and Coin Runners), VS Races, and Time Trials all make a comeback, the Knockout Tour mode is the cherry on top. This addictive multi-track elimination mode offers players a fresh race experience, with racers gradually being booted as the action progresses. A personal favorite is the ability to rail grind on obstacles, although it's a bit tricky and doesn't feel quite as natural as grinding in a Tony Hawk Pro Skater game.

We got our hands on several GameChat modes, such as Video Chat using the Switch 2 Camera. While the camera's image quality, despite being in 1080p resolution, leaves some room for improvement, the ability to gloat and show off after winning a race is a fun touch. I must admit, I'm skeptical about the voice chat feature. During Nintendo's controlled demo, it was somewhat tough to hear other players clearly. Maybe it works better at home or with another pair of connected headphones, but I'll have to test it more extensively to make a sound judgment.

Overall, Mario Kart World is an ideal pick for the Switch 2. The game's $80 digital price (or $90 for a physical game card, or $50 for the Mario Kart World Switch 2 bundle at $500) has been a subject of criticism, but with so much content, it's easy to argue that the price is justified. Despite the absence of DLC, I'm confident I'll be racking up hundreds of hours on Mario Kart World. If there's one game that's a must-grab for the Switch 2, it's certainly Mario Kart World – it's pure, unadulterated fun that showcases the magic of a Nintendo game.
