Time for Some Good Old Justice: Glenn vs Negan Rematch Lands in 'Invincible'

Get ready for an epic showdown, blood-soaked battles, and a dose of long-awaited vengeance! The third season finale of Invincible, now streaming on Prime Video, delivers a bone-crunching face-off between Glenn and Negan - the pair renowned for their infamous encounter in The Walking Dead.

Fans of The Walking Dead can rejoice as their favorite rifle-wielding character gets a chance to settle the score. Glenn is played by none other than Steven Yeun, also the voice of Invincible on the show, and Negan by fan-favorite Jeffrey Dean Morgan, now bringing to life the lethal Conquest. In this thrilling battle, Invincible, with a bit of help from Atom Eve, emerges victorious – finally avenging Glenn's brutal death at the hands of the malevolent villain.

According to co-creator Robert Kirkman, this surprising turn of events was not part of the original plan. "It wasn't intentional for it to be Glenn versus Negan. I don’t think it ruins the episode or anything, but I think it enhances things and puts an extra level of stakes on it. For anyone who’s a longtime Walking Dead fan, it’s a nice bit of justice," Kirkman stated when interviewed by Variety.

The casting of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Conquest was not motivated by the opportunity to give Glenn his long-deserved revenge but rather Kirkman's fondness for the actor. “I’m always trying to find roles for the actors that I know and love and want to work with again. I'm always trying to find something for Jeffrey. When he started showing up on The Boys, I couldn't let Eric Kripke have all the fun. At some point, it became, 'When we get to Conquest, Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be perfect for that.' I didn't hesitate just because there is the meta of it all like, 'Oh, it's the rematch between Glenn and Negan, and now Glenn gets to win.' Something about it seemed fun and interesting," Kirkman added.

As Conquest is vanquished, fans might wonder if a new villain lurks in the shadows. Intriguingly, the mid-credits scene of the finale, featuring Damien Darkblood (voiced by Clancy Brown) and an evil being voiced by none other than Bruce Campbell, hints at a dark storyline Kirkman was unable to explore in the comic series.

"There’s a storyline from the comic that I never got around to doing. Every superhero story has some chapter where they go to hell and they fight the devil. It happens in DC and Marvel comics. It’s a big deal. I never got around to doing anything like that in Invincible. I kept getting sidetracked, and there was never a good time. So it’s entirely possible that we may be doing something like that in the show, and that scene at the end of that episode is setting that up. Oh my God, and we got to work with Bruce Campbell. It’s the best," Kirkman revealed.

While a definitive release date for the fourth season of Invincible has not been announced, Kirkman anticipates it'll premiere sometime in 2026. Dive deeper into Kirkman's thoughts at Variety, and catch up on the first three seasons of Invincible exclusively on Prime Video.
